Listening Party

Are you a hostess (or host) with the mostest? Do you like my music? Do you want a free CD and the chance at a free t-shirt?

There was a time when people used to gather around the Victrola and listen to music. Music used to be the center of parties and socializing, but now it’s become such a private thing with the invention of ipods and streaming music from the internet. I want to bring music back as a means of creating community so I am reinstating the “Listening Party”.

I am encouraging some of my fans and friends to host a listening party at their homes in honor of the release of my new album “Where the Humble Go”. If you agree to do this, I’ll provide you with a free copy of “Where the Humble Go” for you to play at the party, and CD samplers for you to give away as favors at the party.

You can be as creative as you like. Maybe make your listening party a pot-luck and eat dinner together. Or you can make some “humble pie” to keep with the theme. You could make it happy hour after work and do coctails, or tie it in with a group that already regularly meets, like a bible study, book club, or play group. Have coffee together, or make it a dance party.

You also don’t have to sit down and intently listen to the CD the whole time, but I’d like for it to at least be background music. Or, if your friends are music buffs, maybe listen the whole way through and have a discussion afterward.

There is no specific timeline for when the party has to take place, but I am hoping the parties could take place in May, June, or July, while the album is still fresh on everyone’s mind and I am touring.

There will be a contest for the fan that can do the heaviest album promotion (determined by photos you’ll inevitably take) and the winner will earn a free t-shirt!

The first assignment is based on track 1: A New Song. I took a Sociology class my Sophomore year of college and the professor suggested that we would never understand the point of view of people different than us unless we got to know people that were different than us. Knowing it would probably be awkward, I started doing just that. Tweet a picture of an awkward situation. Yes, I realize taking the picture will only enhance the awkwardness.

Wood paneling and purposeful promotion.

Last Friday I had the pleasure of meeting with a talented and Godly worship leader named Jourdan Burks. I had requested to meet with her because I thought she could give me some advice about pursuing a career as a worship leader. While I had planned on exchanging business tips and tricks, God really used her to shed some light on my heart instead. I was reminded that leading worship shouldn’t be a means to an end. Yes, it can be something that pays, but just because you’re a musician and a Christian, doesn’t necessarily mean leading worship is your calling. Also, she reminded me that the one that I am glorifying should always be God. Not me. I’m so used to this self promotion thing by now, that I’d forgotten the reason to self promote is in the hopes that people will hear my music and know God a little better…want more of Him.

On Monday I performed at Song & Story. It was such a talented group of musicians: Chad Hailey, Summer Ames, and Antonio Nogueras. The crowd was smaller than usual, but the people that were there seemed to be really engaged and enjoying the music. It was such a nice surprise, because an old family friend surprised me by coming with her daughter. It’s amazing how many years have gone by and that they are still thinking of me and encouraging me even though we don’t regularly talk.

This recent Friday, the band and I played a house show with Big Round Spectacles, and Cumulonimbus Band. It was fun because I got to share my music with some that had seen us live before, and others that probably never would have checked us out if not for the house show. Everyone was crowded into the living room, listening and clapping along as the music reverberated throughout the wood paneled walls. I could get used to this relaxed, intimate atmosphere for a gig!

I spent my weekend with some friends in Ennis, TX at their Bluebonnet Trails Festival. It was pure Texas goodness. After countless pictures in the bluebonnets, I visited with my grandparents who live in the area. If I wasn’t in love with Denton, Ennis would be a nice place to call home. Lots of friendly people, and I love the cute old houses.

This week will be spent getting all of my ducks in a row for the album release. I am hoping to book The Christian Campus Center for our CD Release Party on May 14^th, and I want it to be the best show any of our fans have seen yet, so the band and I will really be working hard to make that happen.

The importance of 2.5 minutes

I’m taking a break from the songwriting series to stress the effect 2.5 minutes of your day could have on my life. I have entered the band in a contest at www.RockYourselftoSleep.com. Songwriting Series #4: It’s your baby, and babies grow.

It’s a song. It’s something creative that can grow and change. Don’t hold onto it with a closed fist. I get it, it’s your baby. Something you made and you may have a very specific vision for it. But, keep in mind that you’re not always right, you don’t always have the best ideas ever, and sometimes it take the insight of another to shed light on that.

Be open to critique. Attend songwriting workshops, share your ideas with friends or bandmates, perform at open mics. Pay attention to the feedback you get. Also, ignore the schmucks. You’ll get some responses that should just be ignored, and you should do just that. If it’s not constructive, or if they can’t verbalize why they do or don’t like something, don’t stress out about it.

Also, rework your own songs. Even if you think something is finished. It can be helpful to set a song aside for a while and return to it with a fresh outlook. What seemed like pure genius may seem a little too heady or vague. Maybe something that seemed really clever now seems cliché. Continue to refine your song until it’s recording time. At that point, you’ve got to be content with what you laid down in the studio.

A couple good songwriting associations to check out are TexasCSA and NSAI. Both would provide opportunities for you to perform in front of others and get feedback on what you write.

Songwriting Series #3: The handy jotter

Don’t ever underestimate the importance of a handy jotter aka small notebook. It turns everyday occurrences into inspiration for future songs.

For example, last night, the band and I were driving back from Houston, and someone said “my dreams keep me awake”. Sam heard it and thought, “That’d be a good song lyric” so he had me write it down for him in his handy jotter.

Ideas come to us all the time. How often have you thought of something great and told yourself “I’ve got to remember this and work on it later” and then it just disappeared? I am totally guilty of this. I don’t let it happen anymore. I got tired of losing so much material while driving, I finally bought a voice recorder to keep in my car for those ideas.

Sources of inspiration

Pay attention to people around you. Write down clever or interesting ideas or phrases people say.

Get ideas from other songs. Sometimes a mis-heard lyric can turn into a good one for you.

Watch movies and TV shows for ideas…it’s not breaking copyright if you use the lyric in a different art medium, i.e.) a song.

Sermons and teachers

Self-introspection, journaling, meditation, and prayer.

Find a common place to keep all of your bits of inspiration. I have a file folder on my laptop labeled “work in progress” where I type in all lyric ideas. If it’s a melody I don’t want to forget, I record it on Garage Band and save it on my computer.

If you’re jotting everything down on old receipts and post-its that are scattered throughout your purse/car/bedroom, it’s likely that you’ll lose them and never develop the ideas. What a shame that would be!

So, in conclusion…

Step 1. Get a notebook and pencil to keep with you at all times.

Step 2. Keep your eyes and ears open for inspiration.

Step 3. Turn that inspiration into something great.

* A handy jotter is really just a small notebook that you keep with you. I call mine a handy jotter because when I was studying abroad in England, I needed a notebook to take backpacking, and the one I bought said “handy jotter” on the front. So, the name stuck.

Songwriting Series #2: Really? That song is called Iris?

Remember that song, Iris? You may have noticed the Goo Goo Dolls never say the word “Iris” once throughout the whole song, and it’s possible that only Johnny Rzeznick knows why that became the title.

If you are an indie artist writing a song, and if you want people to remember the song, buy the song, google the song, find the song on your album, etc., then it is helpful to know some tips for the title of your song.

1. Make the title unique.

a. Good example: Blah Blah Blah

b. Bad example: Baby

2. Make it the hook- something that repeats throughout the song. Usually in the chorus or at the end of each verse.

a. Good examples: Hot in Herre, Don’t Know Why, Telephone

b. Bad examples: Iris, Misery Business

3. Put the title at the end of the chorus

a. Good examples: Two is Better Than One, Unwritten

4. Keep it short and easy to remember. One word titles can be effective.

a. Good examples: Fireflies, Love Story

b. Bad examples: Pretty much all of Sufjan Stevens’s songs

Remember, these aren’t hard and fast rules. Depending on the “brand” you’re trying to create as an artist, it might be effective to go in a different direction. For example, Sufjan Stevens can title his songs things like “Decatur, or Round of Applause for your Stepmother!” because it works for his brand. His fans like his quirky song titles.

However, if you are trying to develop your craft as a songwriter, it is helpful to follow the rule instead of the exception. Check out the billboard top 100 for examples.

I’ll leave you with an example of what I think is a great song with a title that does all of the things I suggested as tips for a good title.

Songwriting Series #1: Skeletons

Skeletons. Framework. Structure. Outline.

These aren’t the most flowery or creative words, but they’re absolutely necessary for writing a good song. You have to have a road map, a plan, a means of communicating your message to your audience.

Have you ever seen a film that ended and you wondered what the director intended you to feel, think, or conclude when it was over? *cough* Dear John *cough* *cough* That’s what will happen to the listener if you write a song that lacks a backbone.

To get you started, here are some common song formats:

AABA

ABABCB

A= verse

B= chorus

C= bridge

Now that you’ve got a skeleton for your song, you’ve just got to put some meat on them bones!

Musical Influences: Here are a few artists that have crossed my path and made such an impression on me that I was moved to cultivate my own music. Insyderz, Shane & Shane, Mute Math, Imogen Heap, Daft Punk. Lately, Jazz artists have been making a big impact on me.

Favorite "Ashley Gatta" song to play: It changes, but I like Grace Face’s groove and the way triplets sound on it.

Interests/hobbies: I have my phases of interest. Some days, I like going to local shows, other days, I wanna just stay home and watch a movie. I like finishing books, but I need to get better at retaining the information inside them.

Any other facts about you you'd like to share...a funny story, embarrassing moment, where you went to school, your favorite food, etc.: The most frequent question I get asked is "what ethnicity are you?" to which I usually reply, "Probably Hispanic". Upon noticing the uncertainty of my own Hispanic-ness, one usually says. "probably??!" to which I proceed in explaining that I was adopted at 3 days old, not really certain who the mom was. But in some cases one might say nothing but "oh." and leave it at that. In rare cases, I am left with no option to relieve them of their curiosities because they have relieved themselves thinking I'm Turkish, African American, or even Indian, and that leads to embarrassment to both parties. Since there are tooo many embarrassing moments to list (not only related to ethnicity), I'll just list a few facts about myself. I'm studying music at UNT, and am almost done. I have a growing love for Life in the strictest sense of that capital L word, and am happy to be playing music. :)
